The organisers have installed a digital clock in front of Red Square and the Kremlin in Moscow that shows how much time is left until the 2018 FIFA World Cup. With just under 90 days to go until the start of the World Cup, Portugal and Nike have agreed to present the home, away and pre-match kits with which the ‘Lusa’ national team will be looking to win the World Cup title. In high spirits after winning their first continental title in France two years ago, Portugal will travel to Russia this summer as kings of Europe, and they will do so with a collection befitting their new status.
The homekit Portugal will wear in Russia features a modern aesthetic, typical of the ‘Lusos’, topped off with gold detailing symbolising their historic Euro 2016 victory, with a traditional deep red, cross-dyed and brighter red sleeves. According to Pete Hoppins, Senior Design Director, Nike Football Apparel. ‘This design appears on the first kit, with the clear concept of modern royalty. From Luis Figo to Cristiano, Portugal has a number of iconic football players who have led and united the team, but more importantly the nation’. If there is one player who perfectly fits the concept of modern royalty, it is the Portuguese captain; whose records, character and qualities to lead his country, deserve the total respect of his teammates and compatriots. ‘We wanted to tell the story of the king of modern football leading this new team,’ explains Hoppins.
It is clear that Cristiano is the King of Portugal, but the role of such important players as André Silva, João Mario and André Gomes will keep Portugal's footballing future alive. Hoppins comments; ‘Portugal is a nation of discovery, that absolutely extends to their passion and attitude towards football’. This time the away kit is based on the tireless search for new talent through symbols of its naval history. A radiant kinetic green print, inspired by the key points of a compass rose, adorns the front of the all-white second-team shirt. It is a nod to the country's history of exploration and symbolises, as previously mentioned, the discovery of new talent.
Portugal, proud of its nation and above all of its flag, presents one of the most symbolic pre-match jerseys of all those that will be in Russia without a doubt, with a large Portuguese cross, taken from the national flag, dominating the chest of the players. By combining all these kits, Nike and Portugal are sending a message to the world, trying to convey the hunger for more success.
Technologically, the Portugal 2018 jersey is based on the latest Nike Fast Fit Vaporknit version, which is lighter than its predecessor. It features new knit patterns for greater adaptability to the body and sleeves, as well as facilitating speed through performance and aesthetics.
The new Portuguese national football team jerseys will be available on the Fútbol Emotion website at the end of March.
