Football advances day by day and with it, sports gear as well. For 2018 Nike presents the new Phantom line, created with the goal of increasing the sensation of contact with the ball and level up the player’s precision. This is achieved thanks to the incorporation of new technologies and materials both in the upper and the chassis that make fit and touch the strongest points of the Nike Phantom VSN football boots. These will be worn by players such as Philippe Coutinho, Kevin De Bruyne or Sergio Busquets.
The upper, just like what happens with Mercurial and Hypervenom, are composed by the renowned Flyknit thread, but Phantom doesn’t have anything to do with its “sisters”, given that Nike has modified its texture providing an infinitely smoother finish, that doesn’t need to be used to soften up and, just like what happened with the CTR, has a wrinkled finish in the inside lateral, with more grip to control the ball and improve passes. All of this is covered by the ACC technology that protects and water-proofs the entire upper.
As there are sections with different textures, one could think that they’re joined by multiple seams but this is wrong. Now Nike is able to design these textures inside just one section in order to avoid any seams that may tear due to erosion. The most elastic area of the upper is also visible. It’s placed in the instep to easily put the foot into the boot. It also entirely covers the bowknot because, although these boots aren’t laceless, by covering the laces we obtain a completely interference-free vamp.
The chassis of the boot is covered by the upper, turning the construction of this model into a two-piece boot, only joined by the plate. Here is where the new QUADFIT technology appears. This is an inner mesh that is over the chassis (also made with flyknit), placed in the laterals of the boot, and that complies with a double function: fit and stability. This is where the 6 eyelets, with the same function as the Briocables, are placed.
The new plate stands out for being ultra-light as well as reactive, managing thus to lighten the weight of the boot and potentiate to the maximum the energy of the player’s legs. The distribution of the studs combines traditional and modern because there are 14 studs placed in those points of lesser pressure but 3 of them are distributed in the big toe, creating a circle to favour spins. Also, 4 bladed studs have added in the heel for more stability.
