Types of palms

High, medium and low range

  • Top tier

All high-end palms have natural latex as their main component. It is a very delicate latex but with maximum grip and cushioning properties. Each brand introduces different percentages of natural latex mixed with synthetic latex in the high-end palms. But always with a higher percentage of natural latex. In some cases the brands incorporate some substances dissolved in the latex to try to enhance some aspects. For example, some years ago Adidas launched the Titanium palm, which was a natural latex palm with carbon fibres or kevlar dissolved in latex to improve the resistance to erosion of the palm.

  • GMid Tier

The percentage of natural latex and synthetic latex is more equal in this medium range. It is the widest range because it would include two types: the MEDIUM/HIGH range in which the percentage of natural latex exceeds or is equal to that of synthetic latex. Until very recently it was the best there was for competition, but now palms with more grip have come out despite sacrificing a little of the excellent durability that the Supersoft palm has. The other type is the MEDIUM/LOW range, where synthetic latex outperforms natural latex by a percentage of approximately 75% natural and 25% synthetic. In dry conditions the grip and cushioning is similar to the high range, but in wet conditions the grip suffers a little. Synthetic latex has less water absorption capacity and therefore there is more chance of aquaplaning between the latex and the ball. However, the abrasion resistance will be higher than the top of the range, as synthetic latex is more resistant than natural latex.

  • Low Tier

In this range the percentage of natural latex is almost nil or it can even be a palm completely made of synthetic latex. Synthetic latex has poorer grip and cushioning properties, especially in the wet, although it has a very high resistance to palm erosion.

A good way to check the quality of the latex and the amount of synthetic or natural latex in a glove is to look at the water absorption of the palm. If you pour a little water into natural latex, it will be absorbed quickly. If we pour it into a glove with a mixture of natural and synthetic it will be absorbed more slowly. And if we do the same on a palm that is almost all synthetic latex, it will hardly absorb the water and it will spread all over the palm.
